Professor Gianfranco Pasquino Receives Life Achievement Award

Gianfranco Pasquino, Senior Adjunct Professor at SAIS Europe and an alumnus of Johns Hopkins SAIS is the recipient of the Life Achievement Award from the Conference Group on Italian Politics and Society (CONGRIPS) of the American Political Science Association (APSA), presented at this year’s APSA conference in Philadelphia.

With this award CONGRIPS recognizes Gianfranco’s contribution to the study of Italian politics and society and his key role in expanding interest in the study of Italian politics abroad, bringing an international perspective to the understanding of the Italian political system.

Gianfranco Pasquino is Senior Adjunct Professor at SAIS Europe and Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Bologna where he taught from 1969-2012. He was elected Senator of the Italian Republic from 1983-1992 and again from 1994-1996. He is the author and editor of numerous volumes and recently co-edited the prestigious Oxford Handbook of Italian Politics with SAIS European and Eurasian Studies Program Director Erik Jones. Widely respected internationally, Gianfranco served as a parliamentary observer for the 1988 plebiscite and 1989 presidential elections in Chile. He has received laurea honoris causa from the Catholic University of Cordoba, the University of Buenos Aires and University de La Plata. He is currently President of the Italian Political Science Association and member of L’Accademia dei Lincei, the world’s oldest scientific academy founded in 1603 (and counts Galileo Galilei among its earliest members). Students have had the privilege of taking classes with Gianfranco since 1976 including Contemporary Italian Politics, Introduction to International Development, Comparative National Systems and European Political Systems, among others.
