President Bush Nominates SAIS Dean Paul Wolfowitz As Deputy Secretary of Defense

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate Paul Wolfowitz, dean of the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), as deputy secretary of Defense. Wolfowitz has served as the dean of SAIS since 01/1994.

Below is a statement from William R. Brody, president of The Johns Hopkins University, in reaction to President Bush's announcement:

"The bad news is that Johns Hopkins is losing a great dean. The good news is that the country is getting a very smart, very focused, clear-thinking leader as deputy secretary of Defense. Paul Wolfowitz will serve the nation well.

In the seven years that Paul has been at Johns Hopkins, a lot has changed. It's a different world now, in many respects. But SAIS is ready, because Paul and his faculty and staff have had the insight to discern what's important and the commitment to excellence necessary to maintain a leadership role in teaching and research.

Paul repositioned the school from a Cold War orientation, which it had since its founding, to a focus on the impact and challenges of Globalization in the post-Cold War era. He has strengthened the faculty, grown the endowment, raised funds for student aid and enhanced the school's visibility among policymakers in Washington and around the world. Johns Hopkins is grateful, and we wish him the very best."
